Greetings from Vladivostok, Russia where are reporting from the first four days of the Russky Grand Prix which is also the second, and finishing round, of the IJSBA Offshore World Championships. The first round of the world title series was held in Martinique on April 15-17 of this year..
Indeed, competitors from this event are using different strategies depending on whether they competed in the first round or, if they did, depending on how they finished. This event is designed to be more conservative, or perhaps better put, less risky for equipment than the event in Martinique or Russky Grand Prix in the past.
Exactly 30 teams have made it to the line for this event. More had signed up but everything from equipment problems to travel difficulties had narrowed down the field. World Championship classes consist of Runabout Open and Runabout Stock. For the Russky Grand Prix, a Gran Turismo class was added. Grand Turismo was intended to attract recreational watercraft users by the means of a Stock Class which does not allow refueling- this means a smaller track for many of the race days.
Teams arrived from Martinique, Guadelupe, Belgium, Australia, France, China, and the United States to compete against Russian teams. Below are the results from the first four days and the overall standings going into the last two days of racing. Following this are some pictures and some stories about everything transpiring at the event over the 5 days of racing.

Pit Stops Day One
Overview: East End Boys and West End Rules
All in all, things went well during the first four days of competition. The first day of racing led us to believe this was going to be a hot summer week. Competitors were treated to blue skies and warm weather. The sea spray was welcome relief for the racers who were out on the track in the heat.
Day one had some confusion between Russian teams and those from other territories. The race instructions did not make fueling stops mandatory. However, some Russian teams believed that, since it was marked on the map, refueling was mandatory. Some Open Class watercraft had enough fuel to do both laps of the Day One Race while others were unable to complete two full laps given the fuel they were using to achieve their horsepower levels. This scenario caused some disagreements but was ultimately resolved for the rest of the event by making fueling stops mandatory. This was, of course, not applicable to the Gran Turismo Class which does not refuel.
IJSBA has sanctioned this Russky Grand Prix three times and, each time, we have been in a different part of Vladivostok. This is the first time the event was based, and more importantly, the participants stayed, in downtown Vladivostok. This was truly a treat. The weather, beginning day two was not as much of a treat with heavy fog and rainy weather delaying and shortening competitions that, by many accounts, already seemed too short. The weather let up, enough, most nights, to let everyone go out to one of the many wonderful café', restaurants, bars, and night clubs.
